Applying for Aid
The Hosanna Ministry exists so that finances will not be an obstacle to religious sisters who have been called to evangelize in countries where there is little Catholic presence. Specifically, we support sisters from such countries who seek a theological education at the masters level in the US. If you are seeking such aid, we invite you to browse the FAQ below to see whether you might qualify.
Who can apply?
-
An applicant must be a Catholic religious sister or nun.
-
She must come from a country where Catholic theological education is not readily available. (European countries, for instance, offer ample opportunities for Catholic graduate studies. Religious sisters from such countries would not be eligible.)
-
She must be pursuing graduate studies in theology or Scripture at a recognized Catholic institution in the United States.
-
She must intend to return and further the work of the Gospel in her home country after completing her formation in the US.
If you meet these criteria, and are in need of financial assistance, you can find an application below.
When should I apply?
As soon as a religious sister has been admitted (or conditionally admitted) to a graduate program in the United States, she may apply to Hosanna Ministry. In addition to proof of admission, Hosanna Ministry also requires evidence of valid Passport and Visa documentation. However, a sister may submit her application before receiving Visa approval, understanding that the reception of any aid would be contingent on that approval.
Applications must be submitted by the first of April for aid in the Fall and Winter semesters, and by the first of September for aid in the Spring and Summer semesters.
What do I need to submit to apply?
To apply for aid from Hosanna Ministry, religious sisters must submit the following:
-
General Information Form [Download Form]
-
Letter of Intent, outlining:
-
Personal background and vocation story
-
Introduction to her religious community
-
Spiritual and educational goals for her time in the US
-
How this formation might help her spread the Gospel upon returning home
-
-
Financial Need Statement describing the applicant’s financial situation, and the specific support requested from Hosanna Ministry, including estimated costs for tuition, living expenses, and etc.
-
Letter of Introduction from your Superior which:
-
Confirms applicant’s membership in the community
-
Serves as a character reference
-
Outlines/confirms her financial needs
*This can be sent directly to Hosanna Ministry by the superior.
-
-
Proof of Admission or conditional admission to a graduate program in theology or Scripture from a recognized Catholic institution in the U.S.
-
Copy of a valid passport and U.S. visa, if applicable. *Religious sisters may submit their applications while still in the process of obtaining a visa, in which case the awarding of any funds would be contingent on receiving a visa.
How should I submit my application, once completed?
Applications can be sent via email to: contact@thehosannaministry.org, or via snail mail to:

What happens to my application once it is submitted?
Once an application is submitted, an initial review is conducted to ensure that an applicant meets the eligibility criteria and has provided all required documents. Eligible applications are forwarded to the Hosanna Ministry Evaluation Committee, which provides a report and recommendation to the Hosanna Ministry Board. Candidates may be invited for a virtual interview to further discuss their application. The Hosanna Ministry Board of Directors will then make a decision based on the application, interview, and candidate’s alignment with the mission of Hosanna Ministry.
When should I expect to hear back from Hosanna Ministry about my application?
The Board’s decision will be communicated to the applicant within 60 days of the application deadline. Applicants for the Fall and Winter semesters will thus receive an answer by the thirty-first of May, and applicants for the Spring and Summer semesters will receive and answer by the thirty-first of October. Successful applicants will receive an official acceptance letter outlining the details of the support offered, including any conditions or requirements. Recipients must sign an agreement acknowledging the support provided by Hosanna Ministry and committing to the terms of the scholarship, including the intention to return to their home country to continue their mission.
Is anything further required of me while receiving support from Hosanna Ministry?
After a religious sister has been chosen to receive aid from Hosanna Ministry, three things are required of her. First, and most importantly, she is expected to remember the benefactors of Hosanna Ministry in her daily prayers. Second, if requested, she is expected to attend at least one of the fundraiser events hosted by Hosanna Ministry. Finally, upon completion of her studies, she must submit a report explaining how Hosanna Ministry’s support helped her in her formation in the United States, and how she plans to utilize what she has received in the service of the Gospel when she returns home.
